In front of the Riviera Maya coast runs the second largest coral barrier in the world, known as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which goes from the coasts of Cancun to Honduras. At global level, coral reef ecosystems are one of the most important because they harbor a high species diversity and because of the CO2 amounts that it seizes from the atmosphere.
